How much sod should I order?
Answer first: multiply lawn length by width, then add a waste allowance for trimming and irregular edges. Divide the order area by the supplier’s coverage per piece or roll.
Irregular lawns
Break an irregular lawn into rectangles, calculate each part, and add them together. For highly irregular yards, trace the grass-only area on the map tool and use the measured square footage here.
Sod ordering formula
For a rectangle, measured lawn area is length × width. The calculator then applies your waste percentage and divides the order area by the coverage per piece or roll.
Order area = measured lawn area × (1 + waste %)
Worked example: 60 × 40 ft lawn
60 ft × 40 ft.
If each piece/roll covers 10 sq ft, the estimate is 252 pieces or rolls.
Measure grass area, not total lot area
Subtract the house, driveway, patios, planting beds, pool and other non-sod surfaces. For an irregular yard, trace or split the grass-only area rather than applying sod to the entire parcel size.
